The El Portal Undercrossing Project starts construction this month in Encinitas. The project features a new safe path for pedestrians, and bicyclists to cross underneath the north county railroad tracks.
The undercrossing connects highway 101 to Vulcan Ave just east of El Portal Street. There really is no safe and efficient way to cross the train tracks anywhere between Leucadia Blvd and Encinitas Blvd. Now, if you are headed to the Leucadia Farmers Market on Sunday, or headed down to the beach, this undercrossing will provide all of us safe passage. This isn't the only project of it's kind, as you know, the recently finished Sante Fe undercrossing that dips under Interstate 5 at Santa Fe Drive and Encinitas Blvd is already being used and serving our community well.
There is some concern that the gentrification of Coast Highway in this area is going to cause traffic issues, because of the insertion of roundabouts. We will have to wait and see how that will affect our commute.
Nonetheless it is projects like these that develop our San Diego lifestyle and make our communities a great place to live.
