People often ask: Should I exercise? How much should I exercise? What should I be doing? What is best for me? What is the right diet? Every person is different, but there are key things that resonate for every person. Watch our exclusive episode here.

Why Exercise is Important

The human body is designed to exercise every day. The average hunter-gatherer walks between 9 – 11 miles per day. Their lifestyle results in a lean and healthy body. But our lifestyle today is quite different.
If we look at the leading causes of death, almost none of them have anything to do with aging by itself. They are all lifestyle-related, not age-related. When you exercise a muscle, it pulls against the bone to which it is attached, which stresses the bone – and it reacts by getting thicker or stronger.
If you walk or run regularly, don’t stop! But you also need to use resistance exercises to stress every muscle in your body, from the feet on up. It makes the whole skeleton stronger. Exercise makes such a difference in everything else that you do. For example, the heart pumps harder, opens blood vessels, and stretches the vessels to reduce the risk of hardening of the arteries.
Our bodies are designed for activity, and unfortunately, most people don’t exercise enough to work up a sweat for 30 – 60 minutes. For optimal health, we should be active into our 80’s and 90’s.

Genetics Aren’t as Important as Lifestyle

Some people assume that they can’t be healthy because of their genetics. But the truth is that even when people have a genetic tendency toward obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, etc. – Those things don’t happen unless we follow a lifestyle that allows the genes to take over and produce those results.
