While health is essential for people of all ages, retirees tend to focus more of their time and attention on wellness and vitality. As you are entering this phase of life, not only do you want to extend your years as much as possible, but there’s also a desire to enjoy these years to the fullest extent. Optimal health is essential to improve the quality of life and lengthen the time you can spend with your family.

We often hear about diet, exercise, and sleep as some of the most critical factors that affect overall health. But don’t underestimate the importance of mindset: optimism can support good health, especially in aging.

Optimism and Health

Many research studies have been published showing the link between optimism and a thriving life. One study in 2019 found that women “age well” when they are optimistic.

This research was done at Harvard Medical School, and the researchers spent eight years tracking a group of 33,000 women. In the beginning, all women were in good health, and the average age was 67.

The women’s health was checked at the beginning and end of the study, looking at both physical and psychological tests to determine each person’s optimism level. When the testing was done 8 years later, the women in the most optimistic group (based on the initial testing) had the lowest levels of chronic illness, physical problems, or cognitive impairment.

Other research studies support these findings, showing that optimism might be as important as other health factors (diet, exercise, alcohol consumption, or smoking).

How to Be More Optimistic

If you want to live a thriving life and reduce the risk of chronic disease, then consider these tips to infuse more optimism into your daily routine:

·       Positive Affirmations: Choose one or more phrases that remind you of the right mindset, such as “It’s going to be a great day today!” or “I love my life!” Repeat these affirmations first thing in the morning and throughout the day.

·       Gratitude Practice: Take time to ponder on all of the things you are grateful for. Focus on the smallest details, such as clean water to drink, a hug from a grandchild, or the sun shining outside.

·       Best Possible Outcome: What is the best outcome that can result from your current experiences? Focus on the positive opportunities, and you will find more positive coming into your life.
