Tips for Staying Safe in Your Home While You Shelter in Place

With the shelter in place order here in California, we want to share a few tips to help you stay safe at home:

1. Call for Help – Smart Shopping: Avoid exposure by using shopping services instead of walking into the grocery store. Smart shopping options include curbside pickup or grocery delivery to your home. Or, talk to a neighbor or family member to see if they can pick something up for you during their shopping trips. 
2. Avoid Accidents: Be careful to avoid any accidents. Don’t get on the ladder, don’t stand on the tub, or do anything else that could cause injury. Instead, call for help.
3. Don’t Stress: Even though we are living in unprecedented times, rest assured to know that there is no reason to stress. You have a safe home and plenty of support from family and the community. Take the opportunity to pause and take a break from the usual activities of life. 
4. Be Cautious: Be careful about who might call or knock on your door. There are plenty of good charities who could use help, but there are also scammers acting as “charities” or the “IRS.” Just hang up the phone and never give out personal information.
5. Be Proactive: Take advantage of this time to get organized at home. Go through the closets, drawers, and other storage areas in the home. Look for things that can be donated.

The concern about the pandemic should not be a catalyst that pushes you to make irrational financial decisions. Instead, it might be best to wait for 60 or 90 days before changing anything that might impact your financial situation.
