Supreme Court End CDC Eviction Ban – What Does This Mean For Renters?

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of landlords everywhere last week when they rejected the Biden Administrations' recent attempt to extend the CDC Eviction moratorium, which was recently extended until October 3rd, in areas of the United States where there’s high transmission rates of COVID-19.

It’s encouraging that the Supreme Court issued an eight-page majority opinion in their ruling because this shows landlords everywhere, especially smaller ‘mom and pop’ landlords, that there’s reason to hope that the rental market in the United States could be soon getting back on track.

Even though the CDC eviction moratorium may now be a thing of the past, the reality is that some states, including California, have statewide eviction moratoriums that are in place through September (California), and until 2022 (New York).

What Comes Next For Renters?

As we mentioned in our last blog post, most of the money that was supposed to be paid out to renters and landlords nationwide has not been paid out.

Will states kick the distribution of rental assistance funds into ‘high gear’ now that the CDC eviction moratorium has expired?

One can only hope that we will see our elected officials in California, and other states, move forward with distributing those funds, but only time will tell if that’s going to happen or not.

In the meantime, renters in California, Arizona, and Nevada who are behind on rent, or in need of rental assistance, should still apply for programs that are available, so they can benefit from those funds once they are distributed.

What Comes Next For Landlords?

To say that the lives of tens of thousands of landlords nationwide are on the line would be an understatement.

In recent weeks, we’ve seen a story of a landlord being forced to live in her car, due to the financial burden of being unable to collect rent from their tenant during the Pandemic.

This story and countless others nationwide show the continued strain that landlords nationwide face and we hope that that financial strain will soon end, while the rental market begins to get on track nationwide.
