Tips for Seniors on How to Boost Your Immune System

Now is a better time than ever to make sure your immune system is ready to fight against any sickness that comes your way. Follow these tips to be in fighting shape the next time you get sick:

Get Plenty of Sleep: Give your body the time it needs to rest and refuel each day. When you get eight or more hours of sleep per night, you will see improvements in your memory and concentration throughout the day. And your immune system will be more effective when your body is fully recharged.

Eat a Variety of Healthy Food: Vitamins do, in fact, boost your immune system. By eating a variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, and lean protein, you are increasing your vitamins and antioxidants. You can also take a supplemental vitamin in addition to your food intake. 

Don’t Smoke: Cigarettes can cause an increased risk of respiratory illnesses like bronchitis or the flu. It can also increase the risk of serious complications with Covid-19. If you smoke, contact a doctor today to set up a plan to quit. 

Exercise Regularly: When you exercise, you increase the strength of your body overall. Your body will be ready to fight against any sickness that comes its way. Aim for at least 30 minutes a day of walking, biking, yoga, or swimming. 

Keep Stress Low: When you are under high stress, your body feels it. It can immensely affect your physical health: you will sleep less, and many people don’t eat well or exercise regularly when stressed. Find what works for you to keep your stress low by taking up meditation, saying no to some things in your schedule, and doing things that you find relaxing. Read a book or take a daily bath. 

Spend Time Outside: Vitamin D is one of the vitamins that will boost your immune system, and what better way to get it than from the sun? If you get outside every day, you will feel better in all aspects of your life. Be sure to go out in the morning or evening when the sun isn’t too intense.
